Sparta Considering Repairs To Old Baker Elementary School

Sparta is considering repairs on the old Baker Elementary School with the goal to rent out the building.

Public Works Director Dillard Quick and City Administrator Brad Hennessee evaluated the condition of the school Thursday. Quick said the roof is the main part that needs work.

“Around the outside the rubber is pulled back from the gutter,” Quick said. “So, we’re going to have a little cost there to repair the roof. I think they can do what we did at the Civic Center instead of repairing the whole roof.”

Hennessee said parts also need to be purchased for 10 wall units. Quick said besides that, the building is in good enough shape to be rented out.

“When you look down on it from the roof from the top of the hill there down, the roof looks like it is still in good shape,” Quick said. “It is just the edges. And so, we had Turner Roofing come in at the Civic Center and seam a piece around the gutter, which I think will get us by for a while.”

Quick said there is also minor termite damage, but it can easily be fixed. Hennessee said he will report back to the board with prices for both projects at next month’s meeting.

“We can look and based on that number if that is something that we want to do now, or we want to do later,” Hennessee said.

The White County Board of Education used the building as an office, but relocated last summer to the old Findlay School.
