Monterey House Fire Destroys Upstairs Bedroom

A Monterey home lost an upstairs bedroom due to an electrical fire Sunday.

Monterey Fire Chief Kevin Peters said his crew responded to the fire call at 613 N. Elm Street near 10:30 a.m. Peters said an electrical outlet shorted and caused a nearby mattress to catch fire. Peters said the flames spread throughout the room and filled the home with smoke.

Peters said city fire fighters contained the fire to the upstairs room after being on scene for about two or three hours. Peters said some of the nine rental residents were in the downstairs room while the fire started but escaped with no injuries.

The home was not deemed a lose, but Peters said American Red Cross is working with the renters to find other lodging.
