West Putnam County Most Affected By Flooding

Putnam County road crews are out Monday repairing road damages from this weekend’s flash flooding.

Road Supervisor Randy Jones said the western portion of the county was the hardest hit. Northern areas towards Gainesboro were also affected but to a lesser extent.

“Cumby Road, the water went over the bridge there and messed the asphalt up,” Jones said. “I am working personally here on Woodcliff. We had a little mud slide up here and got the road closed. I’ve got a crew that’s working on Garrison Road and Smith Chapel and some of the smaller things that we can open up quick.”

Jones said Woodcliff Road and North Quinland Lake Road will hopefully reopen today. Jones said work is also ongoing for Little Indian Creek, Ensor Hollow Road, Brindley Hollow Road and Sullins Hollow Road.

“We always have a lot of flooding issues where the spring bed is about the same level as the road,” Jones said. “They get out of the banks, and it takes down the road, and it messes up our oil, chip and gravel. We have several areas that just have minor damage.”

Jones said for Putnam County, cleanup efforts should not take very long since the majority of areas affected are common flood zones. Jones said crews are familiar with the work and operate on these roads regularly.

“Just be careful out driving,” Jones said. “I think most of the water has resided down to where it is back into spring beds. That is the most important thing. Do not drive through running water.”
