Obituaries For Wednesday, December 23

Rebecca Smith James, age 57 of Baxter, passed away Wednesday, December 23, 2020 at her home. Arrangements are incomplete.

Olga Louise Pagac Balash (Ms. Olga), 97 of Sparta, passed away Tuesday, December 22 at Life Care Center of Sparta. She was a strong willed woman whose theme was “Things are changing all the time.” She never let an opportunity go by to advise or give a gift, especially of cookies or chocolates. She was a sweet, loving homemaker, mother and friend to her family and pets. Contributions in her memory can be made to Cookeville/Putnam County Animal Shelter (for kittens and cats) 2650 Gainesboro Grade, Cookeville. There are no services planned at this time.

Helen Marie Rathbun, age 66 of Cookeville, Tennessee passed from this life Monday, December 21, 2020, at Centennial Medical Center in Nashville. She was born Wednesday, December 15, 1954 in Cookeville, Tennessee. She was the daughter of the late Earl and Alma (Wilmoth) Maxwell. Helen had chosen cremation and a Memorial Service may be held at a later date.

Funeral services for Jerry Phillips, age 71 of Cookeville, will be held Thursday, December 24 at 11:00 AM from the chapel of Crest Lawn Funeral Home with Bro. Ronnie Dunn Officiating. Interment will follow at Cookeville City Cemetery. Mr. Phillips passed from this life Monday, December 21. Jerry was an outdoorsman who loved fishing, hunting, and spending time with his family, especially his grandkids. He was a Mason for 45 years. He was the loving husband of 51 years to Beverly Jenkins Phillips. He is survived by daughters, Jennifer Prater, and Brittany (Zach) Phy; and son, Mike (Kim) Phillips. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday, December 24, from 10:00 am until the time of service at 11:00 am.

Graveside services for Mr. Roy H. Clouse age 85 of Rickman, will be held Saturday December 26, 2020 at 10 AM at the Zion Hill Cemetery. Officiating will be Bro. Jeff Monday. Please remember to social distance and wear a mask while you are in attendance. Mr. Roy H. Clouse was born in Rickman, Overton Co., TN on Wednesday, April 17, 1935 to the late Alonzo and Fannie (Farley) Clouse. Roy was a retired factory worker who loved working with his hands. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He enjoyed gardening, mowing his grass and growing beautiful flowers. He spent a great deal of time on his front porch after retiring and talking to passerby neighbors, some who were getting their exercise, some who just pulled in to chat but he enjoyed every neighborly visit. When he was able he and his wife attended Rickman First Baptist Church. He made every effort to be the best husband, father and grandfather, and great grandfather as he could possibly be. His family was his whole world and he enjoyed telling his grandkids about his time in the U.S. Army during peacetime and his experiences and excursions across Europe. He sure will be missed but we celebrate that he is with His Savior, His Wife and other beloved family and friends. Survivors include 1 Son: Ricky Clouse and Wife Rita; 1 Daughter: Regina Monday and Husband Jeff.

Graveside services for Mrs. Cheryl Brown, 73, of Gainesboro, will be held at 1 P.M. on Saturday, December 26 at the Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Jackson County. Mrs. Brown passed away on Monday, December 21 at Mabry Health Care Center. She was born March 29, 1947, in Bremerton, WA, to the late Robert Nielens and Hanzy Knudson Nielens. She worked as a cashier at Wal-Mart. Survivors include son, Joe Brown of Cookeville; daughter: Mary Buck of Gainesboro. There will be no visitation or services at the funeral home.

Graveside Services for Mr. Gilbert Poston, age 84 of McMinnville and formerly of Livingston, will be conducted 2 pm Saturday, December 26th, from the Overton County Memorial Gardens. Bro. Chris Coil will officiate. Mr. Poston passed from this life on Wednesday morning, December 23 from Webb House in McMinnville. He was born in Jackson County on October 11, 1936, to the late John and Zelma Allen Poston. Gilbert loved his family, visiting friends, and going to flea markets to trade knives. He loved going to church and spending time with his church family. Mr. Poston leaves behind his loving wife Rose Ann Poston, and daughter Tami Ross and husband Larry of McMinnville. The family will welcome friends at the graveside.

Memorial services for Carolyn Bea Zolg, 85 of Cookeville, will be held at 2PM December 26 at the First Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Cookeville. Mrs. Zolg passed into glory and joined her Lord and Savior on December 15 while surrounded by family in her home in Cookeville. Carolyn found her soul mate in Robert “Bob” Zolg at a young adult dance hosted by their local YWCA in Dayton, Ohio. They married on January 7, 1961. Bob and Carolyn started their family in Ohio and moved shortly thereafter to California. The family lived there five years but spent a majority of their daughters’ grade school years in Tucson, Arizona. They moved to Cookeville in 1985 where both Bob and Carolyn had rewarding careers. Carolyn retired as a reading professor from Tennessee Tech University in 2003 after 17 years. Carolyn was a generous and giving wife, mother, friend, and volunteer. Survivors include her husband of 60 years, Bob Zolg of Cookeville; two daughters, Lisa Vaughnn (David), of Rockville, Maryland.; and Kristi Davidson (Gregg) of Oxford, Miss. The family would especially like to thank her caregiver, Donna, for her care of Carolyn as she lived with Parkinson’s Disease. Visitation will be held December 26, at 1PM at the First Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Cookeville.

Private family graveside services and interment for Mrs. Geraldine Owens Flatt, age 84 of Cookeville will be held Sunday, December 27th at Crest Lawn Memorial Cemetery. Bro. Johnny Fox will officiate. Mrs. Flatt passed away Sunday, December 20 at Quality Care Nursing Home in Lebanon. She attended school in Cookeville and was a graduate of Cookeville High School. Mrs. Geraldine loved her family and was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and sister. She loved cooking and being around people. She is survived by sons, Roger (Nancy) Flatt, of Cookeville, and Douglas (Tawana) Flatt, of Lebanon. Memorial contributions are suggested to be made to Heart of the Cumberland, PO BOX 2474, Cookeville, TN 38502-2474.

Graveside services for Michael Ward Davis was born, age 54 of Jackson County, will be held on Sunday, December 27 at 1 P.M. at the John L. Clark Memorial Cemetery, with Ken Lewis officiating. Mr. Ward passed away on Saturday, December 12 at Cookeville Regional Medical Center. Michael was the son of Jackie Ward Davis and Peggy June Stafford Ward. He was a member of the Free State Church of Christ and a factory worker. Survivors include his son, Jacob Ward (Macy) Davis of Cookeville, and mother, Peggy Ward of Gainesboro.

Funeral services for Jennette Ruth Sullivan, age 85 of Cookeville, will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday December 29 at Hooper Huddleston and Horner Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Smith Chapel Cemetery. Jennette passed away Tuesday morning December 22, 2020 at her home. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 10 a.m. until service time. Please practice social distancing and the use of masks are encouraged.
