Portable Heater Dangers When Used Incorrectly

Portable heaters can be a convenient way to heat a home but can be a fire hazard when used improperly.

Overton County Fire Chief Rocky Dial said the most common mistake he sees on responding calls are people using a cheap extension cord to power their portable heater. Dial said these heaters are safe if someone knows how to use them.

“Don’t use extension cords, make sure they’re plugged into the wall outlet,” Dial said. “Keep all items at least four to six feet away from them and when you leave, make sure that you turn them off.”

Dial said if you sleep with a portable heater on, it is important to be sure that smoke alarms are working in the home. He said residents should reach out to their local fire departments about getting a free smoke alarm installed.
