Algood City Officials Get To Work On Liquor Ordinance

Liquor by the drink in Algood should be available by late January.

Algood voters approved liquor by the drink Tuesday night. City Administrator Keith Morrison said once the votes are certified the city council will meet to determine zoning and prepare the ordinance. Morrison said the ordinance will set how much of a businesses sales can be from alcohol.

“It’s not really for a bar, the idea was to get a nice sit down restaurant here and so we want the majority of the sales to be food and other items, and allow for a different atmosphere,” Morrison said. “We don’t want the majority of the sales to be the liquor.”

Morrison said the city will work with the Alcoholic Beverage Commission to set up the cities process on liquor licenses. Morrison said he believes this will benefit Algood’s ability to recruit businesses and keep property taxes low.

“I think it’s gonna have a big impact, I think it’s gonna be a good thing for Algood,” Morrison said. “It gives us another opportunity to expand and grow and continue to be a great town.”

Morrison said he knows there are people with hesitation on what this means for Algood. However, he said the city will do its due diligence on how liquor by the drink works.

“There was a lot of concern that it would increase drunk driving and things of that nature,” Morrison said. “We can assure people we’re not going to allow that to happen, so we’re going to continue to work hard to make Algood a great town and continue to grow responsibly.”

Liquor by the drink passed Tuesday night with 64 percent of the vote. This vote will allow establishments to sell and dispense alcoholic beverages with an alcohol level at 8 percent or greater.
