Sparta Police Get New Cameras

Sparta’s police department will be receiving new body and in-car cameras.

The Board of Alderman on Thursday approved the $94,000 purchase. Mayor Jeff Young said the equipment is apart of the department’s yearly upgrades.

“They do every year approach us with a new list of equipment and upgrades they are going to need for the upcoming year,” Young said. “So, this was a budgeted item. What we approved tonight is body cameras, in-car cameras, recording equipment and all those type of pieces that will record everything they do.”

Young said the cameras can wirelessly transfer video footage straight to the department. The 15 body cams and 11 in-car cameras should arrive by December.

This is the second investment made in the department in the last month with a new pursuit vehicle purchased in September.
