Van Buren County Commissioners will vote next month on a 45-cent property tax increase.
“It took a lot of work, I’ll be honest with you,” Van Buren County Mayor Greg Wilson said. “The meeting yesterday lasted a pretty good while. This has just been one of a series of meetings into the final document from the Budget Committee that they passed.”
The Budget Committee approved a roughly $4 million budget Monday. It includes major spending cuts and the property tax increase to get balanced. Wilson said he laid off seven employees during the process. Wilson called the other cuts significant.
“The Budget Committee had to go back to the drawing board, so to speak, and after some cuts were done and that in combination with 45 cents got us to this point,” Wilson said.
County Commissioners will vote on the final budget August 10.
“If it does not pass, we’ll go back to the drawing board and come up with another one that that will allow us three weeks to get another get the budget passed,” Wilson said.
