A Cumberland County Sheriffs Deputy was airlifted to University of Tennessee Medical Center Saturday night after a shooting on Chestnut Hill Road.
The deputy responded to a suspicious person call just after 7pm. The deputy exchanged gunfire with an unnamed suspect. The deputy was wounded on the upper right side. The condition of the deputy is not known.
According to Cumberland County Sheriffs Officials, the suspect barricaded himself in a vehicle after gunfire. The SWAT Team and Crisis negotiators were deployed. Negotiators failed to make contact with the suspect.
Law enforcement decided to deploy chemical weapons to clear the scene. As they advanced on the vehicle, they found the suspect dead.
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is on the scene. The name of the suspect is being withheld until next of kin are notified.
