Cookeville residents have until July 5 to set off their own fireworks according to city ordinances.
The city’s safety ordinance prohibits allows firework displays until midnight on the night of the Fourth and not past 10 p.m. on the fifth. City Manager James Mills said always keep water nearby.
“You’re prohibited from exploding or igniting fireworks within 600 feet of any church, hospital, funeral home, or school,” Mills said. “Also, you’re prohibited from exploding them within 200 feet of any place where fireworks are stored, sold, or offered for sale. You can’t shoot them from a motor vehicle either.”
Mills said if you’re selling fireworks, your stand must be at least 200 feet away from any fuel source and within 500 feet of a fire hydrant.
“Know your fireworks, read the caution label before firing,” Mills said. “Obey local laws. We do have limitations on the times that fireworks can be used. Generally alcohol and fireworks don’t mix, and we recommend the use of safety glasses.”
