Overton Co. Museum Reopens

The Overton County Heritage Museum in Livingston has reopened.

Museum Director Paula Stover said museum officials used the down-time to perform some improvements to the building.

“We’ve done some repainting of the floors and walls,” Stover said. “The military exhibit has been completely redone. So, they will see a complete new area when they come through the military section.”

Stover said something she is excited about is a new exhibit that will take patrons back to the founding of the nation. She said an exhibit on Revolutionary War soldiers should open soon.

“It will be the Revolutionary War soldiers buried in Overton County. You’d be surprised how many there is. There’s 50.”

In addition to the new exhibit, Stover said she and her sister began writing a book as they were researching the exhibit. She said they hope to have it published in the near future.

Stover said a positive that came out of the was completing the much-needed work on the museum.

“Painting the floors is a big job,” Stover said. “Everything had to be moved around. And on the walls, too. You have to take everything off the walls and redo it. That was just a great time to do it.”

The decision to reopen the museum, Stover said, coincided with guidelines being handed down from a state museum organization.

“We are a part of the Tennessee Association of Museums,” Stover said. “They had the guidelines, and we’ve had meetings to decide when and how to reopen museums. We will have the safety precautions posted on our doors.”

The Overton County Heritage Museum is open Thursday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
