Bee Rock Bathrooms Coming By September

Bids for Bee Rock’s site improvement and installation of prefabricated restroom facilities are complete.

Enviro Loo USA won the bid for the prefabricated bathrooms at $23,502.45. Thatcher Sales and Erectors won the bid for installation and site work for $20,600.00. Monterey Grant Administrator Dawn Kupferer said the city is excited both bids came in under budget.

“That will leave us some extra room for some additional items that we hoped for, and we anticipated we might have to find some private money or the city come up with a little extra money,” Kupferer said.

Kupferer said Monterey will order the prefabricated restrooms this week. The entire restroom facility will run by solar panels and is expected to be installed by September. Monterey will not put infrastructure on more than a fourth of an acre at Bee Rock due to the conservation easement placed by Bob Walker, who donated the land in 2018.

“Bob Walker put in a conservation easement for the town of Monterey,” Kupferer said. “He wants people to visit there, but he doesn’t want it to grow into a big tourist attraction. He wants people to enjoy the vistas and be able to get out in nature. And that’s the same thing the town of Monterey wants.”

Kupferer said the city might use the extra money for signage and steps to navigate Bee Rock. Also, Monterey Vice Mayor Starlett Wessels said in a meeting Monday night she would like to add a security camera system for the facility. Alderman J.J Reels agreed to protecting the facility.
