It could take as long as five years for Cookeville Regional Medical Center to fill three urologist positions.
CEO Paul Korth said the country’s limited urology program means fewer graduates.
“There is only 344 urologists that are coming out of a trained program and graduating this year and being available to start work somewhere,” Korth said. “So the number throughout the United States is very very small.”
With 142 accredited urology programs available, Korth said that’s approximately three urologists per facility. He said the United States has over 5,000 hospitals.
Some candidates have been found and interviewed. Korth said no one has accepted any offers yet.
“We’ve put a lot of information online,” Korth said. “We’ve recently done a video presentation to present to candidates about the opportunity in Cookeville.”
Other recruiting efforts include sending flyers to medical graduates, seeking other physicians, and posting job ads in urology newsletters.
The hospital has two urologists, Dr. Lee Moore and Dr. Tim Collins.
