Clay County has extended the application period for its housing rehabilitation program.
Mayor Dale Reagan said eligible residents have until January 28 to submit an application.
“We got $500,000 from the Tennessee Housing Development Agency for some home rehabilitation,” Reagan said. “It’s something that really needs to be done up here in Clay County. We just hope that we can serve as many people out there that we can. I know $500,000 sounds like a whole lot of money, but when you start doing construction it doesn’t go very far on a lot of things.”
The county will use the lump sum of money to rehabilitate homes for low-income individuals and families. Reagan said he’s hoping the money can serve up to 10-residents, but that may not be possible.
“It just depends on severity of each home,” Reagan said. “It’s a scoring system that they use. I don’t know if it will be a state inspector or a federal home inspector that will determine which homes receive repairs.”
Fentress, Jackson, and Van Buren counties plus the city of Spencer have all received similar grants from the THDA in the last year. The THDA has awarded nearly $2 million in grant funding to Upper Cumberland communities in that time frame.
