News Talk 94.1/AM 1600 Where The Upper Cumberland Talks
Residents across the Upper Cumberland reported feeling an earthquake that struck East Tennessee Monday afternoon.
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) said the 3.8 magnitude earthquake occurred at 1:12 p.m. near Fincastle in Campbell County.
A USGS intensity map indicates that people reported feeling the small quake as far away as Red Boiling Springs. Residents also reported feeling tremors in Cookeville, Sparta, Smithville, and Crossville.
The earthquake occurred in the Eastern Tennessee seismic zone. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, it’s one of the most active earthquake areas in the Southeast. The zone extends across parts of Tennessee, Georgia and Alabama.
A Tennessee Tech Earth Sciences professor previously told News Talk 94.1 that it’s not uncommon for for earthquakes in the Eastern United States to felt long distances away.
