Putnam County EMS Pioneer Passes Away Saturday

A Putnam County Emergency Medical Services pioneer has passed away.

Fred Maynard died Saturday at the age of 71.

Assistant 911 Director Mike Thompson said Maynard leaves a legacy that won’t soon be forgotten.

“He made an impact on a lot of different responders, EMTs, and paramedics,” Thompson said. “Certainly, he’s no doubt responsible for saving the lives of many in Putnam County. He will certainly be missed by all.”

Maynard became the county’s third paramedic after completing his training in 1975. Thompson said Maynard helped in the advancement of Putnam County EMS by working with doctors and nurses to set new protocols for emergency medicine.

“The paramedics in the field would not have to call in to the emergency room doctors for every type of treatment. In other words, starting and IV or giving certain drugs,” Thompson said. “The protocol that he was instrumental in helping develop was certainly a time saver, and no doubt saved some lives.”

Maynard also served as a law enforcement officer for the Cookeville Police Department and Putnam County Sheriff’s Office. Thompson said Maynard also served as a diver for the Putnam County Rescue Squad and a dispatcher for the sheriff’s office.

“He was certainly an inspiration, and I think I can speak for others who worked with him at various times. I know they feel the same way,” Thompson said. “He was always willing to go above and beyond the call of duty and was always looking out for you as his partner.”

Funeral services for Maynard will take place Tuesday at Presley Funeral Home.
