Residents of southern Cumberland County will soon have waterlines extended to their homes.
County Mayor Allen Foster said a $468,865 grant will fund the project.
“We’ve got some people in the southern portion of Cumberland County that don’t have water provided by a utility district. They’re still on the well system and certain area have some particularly bad water that’s not even potable,” Foster said. “This is going to extend water service from South Cumberland Utility District on down to the Highway 28 region. It’s (the grant) going to do something that we couldn’t do without it.”
The state awarded the Community Development Block Grant to Cumberland County earlier this month. The county commission voted to apply for the grant at the beginning of this year.
“We have applied for this grant before and we didn’t quite make it,” Foster said.
Foster said the utility district would provide the matching funds for the grant.
