Byrdstown To Continue Water Rehab Work With CDBG Funding

A new round of grant funding has allowed Byrdstown to continue efforts to improve its water system.

Mayor Sam Gibson said the town has received another $525,000 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG).

“We have a lot of water lines that are old and too small and we’ve probably got a lot of leakage in those because we have quite a bit of water loss,” Gibson said. “This grant will give us an opportunity to go through in some different areas and replace those lines.”

Gibson said the focus area for the upcoming project will be the Star Point and Eagle Cove areas.

“We’re going to look at also increasing the size of the lines and making the volume better for people in those areas,” Gibson said. “Those areas are growing rapidly and we’re trying to meet some of those demands with grants like this.”

This marks the second $525,000 CDBG awarded to Byrdstown in the past three years. Gibson said the city used a 2017 grant to rehabilitate the water system in the Bloomington area.

“When we get a grant of this magnitude, we want to try to spread it out as much as we can,” Gibson said. “We’re a small community, and if were going to do some work, everyone expects us to come into their community. We try to do that.”

Gibson said the latest project will get started with the design and engineering process, which could take several months to complete.
