The City of Cookeville has accepted a $100,000 grant award for constructing a new dog park at Cane Creek Park.
Leisure Services Director Rick Woods said the city will have two years to complete the project.
“We will need to have some engineering services because we are spending more money now than we thought we were,” Woods said, “and we are looking at specifics of locations as well, which we have a little bit of flexibility.”
The Boyd Foundation awarded Cookeville the non-matching grant last month. Woods said the community played a huge role in helping Cookeville receive the grand prize from the company.
“There was a community engagement component to this grant,” Woods said. “Our community stepped up and submitted photographs and all sorts of different things to allow us to get from the $25,000 level to the $100,000 level. Congratulations to this community.”
Boyd Foundation officials will visit Cookeville next month to present the check to the city.
“I want to commend Leisure Services and the City of Cookeville for coming together and really showing that they wanted this,” Vice Mayor Laurin Wheaton said. “It worked, and I’m so excited about this.”
The Cookeville City Council voted to accept the award during Thursday’s meeting. City officials have not announced a construction start date at this time.
