A Cookeville man was arrested Tuesday after being found passed out behind the wheel of a stopped vehicle.
Baxter Police charged 34-year-old James Maynard with DUI, simple possession of a controlled substance, and being a habitual motor vehicle offender.
Arrest warrants state police received a complaint of a man slouched over inside a running vehicle at the Baxter Shell station.
Police arrived on scene and found Maynard passed out with his foot on the brake. Warrants state Maynard was removed from the vehicle, admitted to taking a Xanax tablet and failed field sobriety tests.
A search revealed nearly two dozen pills including 19 Xanax tablets and other prescription painkillers.
A records check revealed Maynard had been declared a habitual motor vehicle prior to Tuesday’s arrest. Both incidents occurred in Putnam County, with the first coming in 2009 and the second in 2012.
Maynard has since posted his $7,000 bond and will appear in court Sep. 9.
