Livingston to Enforce Junkyard Ordinance

The City of Livingston will begin to enforce a junkyard ordinance.

Mayor Curtis Hayes said the ordinance serves as the last in a series of property maintenance codes enacted by the city.

“You know, everything will be fine if we just use a little common sense. And the city is not trying to be the big bad wolf,” Hayes said. “We just want to make sure Livingston is the best it can possibly be. We truly believe that the codes that we have now got in place that we can make it the best.”

The Livingston Board of Aldermen and Mayor approved the final and second reading of the junkyard ordinance last week.

Hayes said the new City Building Codes Inspector Kristian Mansell will oversee the codes.

“So all of this will be funneled through the property maintenance codes,” Hayes said. “And again Mr. Mansell he’s got a full plate already.”

The code defines a junkyard as an establishment or place of business used for storing, buying, and selling junked vehicles and parts. Hayes said he believes the definitions are clear enough.

“So that is going to be one of the first tests that Mr. Mansell will have to do,” Hayes said. “To understand the codes on that.”

The ordinance would only apply to any new junkyards that open after the ordinance becomes official. Preexisting junkyards will remain grandfathered in, even if they are within violation.
