Sparta Narrows Search for City Administrator Position

The City of Sparta has narrowed down the search for a new city administrator.

Mayor Jeff Young said the city began the interview process on Friday.

“The search is going really good, we actually had fourteen new applicants. We have been reviewing those with MTAS with the University of Tennessee,” Young said. “And we have got it down from fourteen applicants to four.”

The city opened the applications in April after Chris Dorsey announced his resignation in March.

“The plan is to interview four [Friday] and get down to two. It will be two weeks before our next meeting,” Young said. “At the next meeting, we will actually bring those last two candidates for the full board to meet. And then the full board will vote at the next meeting.”

Young said he hopes to have someone in the position in the coming months.

“So I hope if all goes well, three to three and a half weeks to make a decision on getting someone hired. And at that point, if there is somebody that works another job and wants to put in a notice, that will be another two or three weeks,” Young said. “So we are looking at probably the biggest part of two months, six or seven weeks before it takes place and they are actually on the job.”

The Sparta Board of Aldermen and Mayor appointed city recorder Tonya Tindle as Interim City Administrator earlier this month.
