The Putnam County Clean Commission will host a Center Hill Earth Day Clean-Up on Monday.
Executive Coordinator Shannon Reese said the commission has conducted water clean-ups the past three years.
“Each year they kind of get larger and larger so we wanted to make sure we had a large area,” Reese said. “And incorporating other groups I think helps to get the word out and encourage people that don’t necessarily know about this to participate and be aware of what the clean commission does.”
Reese said the cleanup will primarily affect the Putnam County side and Cane Hollow.
“Cane Hollow is something we are focusing on. Cummins is interested in kind of adopting it,” Reese said. “The Army Corps of Engineers manages it. So we are trying to get it cleaned up so that the population and local residents can go out and enjoy it.”
Reese said most people do not know about the Cane Hollow area.
“But there have been people that really shouldn’t be there doing things they shouldn’t be doing,” Reese said. “So we are hoping that this clean-up will really encourage people to, first of all, get out there and enjoy this area, but at the same time encourage people that haven’t been taking care of it to take good care of it.”
Reese said the event will have a container for all the trash, which will be weighed later. The clean-up will also host a Barbeque at noon for the volunteers.
“So it’s going to be, I think, fun. This is the first time we have done this on such a large scale. But since the lake is so large. We feel we are going to be more effective running people out and then having supervisors in each area.”
Clean-up begins at 8:00 am. Those who wish to participate must register on the commission’s Facebook page.
The clean-up is one of several individual events across the county.
