Portobello America will begin phase one of the building in the coming months.
That according to Baxter Mayor John Martin.
“As soon as the weather breaks, if we can ever get it to stop raining, of course, we are supposed to get three inches between now and Sunday,” Martin said. “They are ready to start digging. Their plans are to hopefully have maybe phase one building up by November of this year.”
Martin said phase one will most likely complete the office space and warehouse.
“It is going to take a long time to build what they are planning on building there,” Martin said. “We are probably going to have to do some ground cites, as far as height and different things because there are city code and variances. But we are really anxious to see that happen.”
Martin said the city needs to continue work with TDOT on sewer and water lines and the roadway.
Baxter officials will meet with TDOT and the Upper Cumberland Development District on March 15 to discuss the project.
The ceramic tile manufacturer will invest $150 million to open the U.S. headquarters at the old Tennessee Motor Speedway site.
Portobello expects to have the new facility built by 2021.
