Cumberland Container will have ability to trace all paper products with the Sustainable Forestry Certification (SFI).
Operations Manager Andrew Miller said the certification keeps paper sources accountable.
“Our end customer or wherever the box may end up will have a stamp and a number that will be traceable back to us,” Miller said. “And then we therefore can trace our order number and the sheets back to our vendors and then they can go all the way back to the forest as where the trees were used and cut.”
Miller said the SFI values the responsibility of paper products in chain-of-custody companies.
“We are a chain of custody, so we are like a link in the chain. We had to pursue getting the certification,” Miller said. “And we actually had went through Timber Products Inspection.”
Miller said the company heard about the SFI through customers and other companies.
“We want to be responsible and try to help conserving our forestry,” Miller said. “But also we don’t have any paper coming to us from overseas. Or mainly, it doesn’t come from forests that are not accountable. ”
Miller said Cumberland Container may use the certification as a stepping stone for more sustainable practices.
“Here is just another step we are trying to take to be more green. I believe it will. I believe it is going to help customers understand that we know where the paper came from.”
