Algood Approves Sewer and Water Tap Rate Increase

The City of Algood will increase the sewer and water tap rates for all new construction and businesses.

The City Council passed the final reading of an ordinance regarding the rates during the Tuesday meeting. Mayor Lisa Chapman-Fowler said the rate increase will bring city utilities into the black.

“Well, I think it was necessary because we were actually operating at a deficit and it was costing the city more to put in water and sewer taps than what we were actually charging for them,” Fowler said. “And so we are not allowed to run at a deficit as a municipality. So I think it is a good thing.”

The ordinance set an average increase of approximately $360.

Fowler said the rates fluctuate based on the location and the type of tap.

“This does not affect any current residents. In this, we are only talking about new construction or new businesses, that type of thing,” Fowler said. “This does not affect anyone that already has this.”

The council also voted to drop the deposit fee for new residential customers desiring water or sewer services.

The new application for water and sewer service requires a $45 fee per meter.

Fowler said both ordinances are designed to keep Algood out of the red.
