The City of Sparta will now begin the search for two new police officers.
Cheif Jeff Guth said the police force does not see much job turnover.
“But with the new sheriff’s election, a couple of my officers decided to go to the Sheriff’s Department. So I wish them the best,” Guth said. “But that is what has happened here. So usually it is not. these officers that are leaving they’ve been here for ten years.”
Guth said he prefers to hire certified applicants to replace the two seasoned officers.
“Well, I would like to have officers that are certified already because that means I don’t have to pay to send them to the academy. Of course, there is an age requirement,” Guth said. “State law says you must be eighteen years old and have a high school diploma. We usually don’t hire eighteen-year-olds, they are usually twenty-one or older.”
The City of Sparta approved the solicitation of police officer applicants at the meeting tonight.
