As the calendar turned to April, the Highlands Fitness Challenge 2018 kicks off.
Highlighting a healthy lifestyle through competition, the challenge allows residents of Jackson, Overton, Putnam and White Counties to participate in county-led walks, hikes and seminars.
Katie Woodard serves as Putnam County Health Department’s public health educator.
“We have over thirty walks already scheduled,” Woodard said. “When those people sign up for this challenge, they will get a schedule of those walks and seminars they can attend.”
Woodard said the challenge showcases the natural beauty of the Highlands and how the community can use that environment for a healthier lifestyle.
And your work could mean prizes. Each month a drawing for fifty dollars will take place.
“To be put in the drawing for a monthly prize, a person has to go to a walk or a hike or a seminar at least four times a month,” Woodard said. “If they go to those four times a month, they will be put in a drawing for a fifty dollar prize. At the end of the challenge, the people with the most points will also get an even bigger prize.”
The first place winner will receive a $275 prize, while second earns $175 and third wins $125. The challenge runs through June 30.
In addition to the overall four-county program, Woodard said each county plans their own seminars and activities for the challenge.
Registration forms are available through the county health departments in Cookeville, Gainesboro, Livingston, and Sparta.
