3 Tornadoes Touch Down Sunday, 2 In Fentress

A National Weather Service storm survey team determined three different tornadoes touched down in the Upper Cumberland Sunday.

All three were EF1 storms on the Enhanced Fujita Scale, with winds between 86 and 110 mph. No injuries were reported.

The first storm hit just after 4:30 Sunday, traveling some 11 miles between the Jamestown Airport and Allardt. It snapped hundreds of trees with more than a dozen outbuildings and barns destroyed. Several homes received roof and window damage. The tornado lifted along Scenic Bluff Road, just south of Highway 52.

A second tornado touched down less than 30 minutes later near the intersection of Highway 70N and Meadow Creek in Crossville. Forecasters said the storm lifted almost immediately before reaching Highway 127 near I-40. One house slid off its foundation. Several outbuildings were damaged.

The final storm touched down around 7:35pm Sunday night just west of Bicknell Road and Leamon Hall Road, between Clarkrange and Jamestown. The storm traveled east-northeast for some 1.8 miles. Forecasters found dozens of trees uprooted and snapped. Two homes were damaged.

The Weather Service Sunday reported very high wind shear in the atmosphere across the Upper Cumberland, allowing the storms to power up quickly.
