12 Revolutionary War Veteran Graves Remain Unmarked in Putnam County

The state’s Sons of American Revolution organization trying to identify and mark the graves of 12 Revolutionary War veterans buried in Putnam County.

Graves and Landmarks Committee Chair Joel Davenport said the group has narrowed down their resting place to the county. Davenport said some do not even have a headstone.

“It was said in Roman Culture that a man had two deaths,” Davenport said. “One death when he took his final breath. The next death was when the last person said his name. We want to keep our patriots alive by saying their names.”

Davenport said the group wants to reach out to families to try and locate the graves. Davenport said the state would provide a free Veterans Association headstone to remember their names.

“We want there children, grandchildren to know their names,” Davenport said. “Hopefully as they, just like we have, have learned things that’s going to make them more committed to be good citizens, being productive and leaders in society.”

John Allison, Nathan Bartlett, William Bohannon, Jonathan Buck, Francis Fergus, John Henry Holley, Joseph Jared, William Jared, John William Madewell, William Pennington Quarles, Nathan Sullins and William Young are the soldiers identified.
