City Manager James Mills has named Benton Young Cookeville’s interim Fire Chief.
Young became a shift captain in 1996, making him the most experienced shift captain in the department, according to Mills.
“Captain Young will be serving as Interim Chief until a permanent Chief is hired,” Mills said in a release Thursday morning. “He is well respected and supported by the men and women of the CFD and will bring continuity during this transition.”
Young will begin serving as interim chief Monday. Long-time chief Daryl Blair will retire Friday.
Mills said earlier this week the city would conduct a statewide search for Blair’s replacement. The city announced his retirement just one week ago.
