Young Men United will host the 22nd annual Juneteenth Celebration in McMinnville Saturday.
Juneteenth remembers June 19, 1865, when word got to Galveston, Texas that enslaved people were now free. Young Men United Vice President Ella Richmond said the event is designed to unite the community.
“It doesn’t matter what color you are, what race you are, what religion you are, what political party that you are from,” Richmond said. “It’s we are all one and we want that unity within the community.”
The celebration takes place Saturday at 103 Bernard Drive from 11:00am-6:00pm. The event is free of charge and will have food vendors and entertainment. Nashville R&B Band Melody & Harmony will perform. Richmond said the event has something for everyone to enjoy.
“We’ve got a group coming out to talk about health, doing health fairs and all of that,” Richmond said. “We will have the bouncy house set up inside our gymnasium for the kids to go in and play so the parents can kind of enjoy, it will be supervised in there and we are looking for a big day tomorrow.”
Richmond said Young Men United appreciates the support from local officials for the event.
“We appreciate the community as a whole because they have always supported what we’ve done,” Richmond said. “And we really appreciate that from the city administrator to the county administrator.”
