York Institute Educational Assistant Jody Hancock has been named a state finalist for the Recognizing Inspiring School Employees (RISE).
Hancock has been employed with York Institute for 28 years. She said she works with special ed and regular ed students to help them keep on top of their work and learn life and job skills.
“I just want kids to have what they need,” Hancock said. “Any kid not just special needs. Any child that comes through our doors, we want them to feel like they have someone they can turn to for clothes, shoes, food, emotional support, whatever they need.”
The RISE award was established by Congress in 2019. Hancock will serve as one of two state representatives at the National RISE Awards.
Hancock said what started as a peer tutor in high school turned into the career she has now. She said she has always wanted to help the underdog.
“Sometimes our special needs kids kind of get left out,” Hancock said. “But here in Jamestown, at our school, our kids are so good to each other. But I’m just so passionate about every student having what they need and getting the same chance.”
Hancock said while she is not one to want attention, she appreciates the recognition of educational assistants. She said she is thankful for her team and her leader, Karen Flowers.
