Sgt. Alvin C. York State Historic Park is taking people back in time, highlighting traditional farming during Field Day on Saturday.
Park Manager Nate Dodson said reservations are currently open online for full tours of the Sergeant’s farm. Dodson said that each year that passes, more people forget what farm life was like.
“You see parts of the valley that you wouldn’t normally see and we will point out some of the out buildings and some of the crops that were grown. There’s a really nice view of the gristmill from across the Wolf River. So it highlights not just the story of Sgt. York and his home.”
Dodson said restoring and running the visitor center corn mill is a centerpiece to this year’s event. Dodson said residents will see corn grown on site become a usable product just like the old days.
“We’re excited about highlighting the way that Sgt. York and others like him in the valley worked their farm,” Dodson said. “The products that they produced ultimately, and I think it’s just a really neat way to immerse yourself in that time period.”
Dodson said there will be plenty of music and demonstrations on Saturday. He said with as much as there is being offered, something will catch the interest of kids.
“Hayrides going on throughout the day, we’ll have a program about some honeybees,” Dodson said. “We actually have some hives on site that I think kids would really enjoy, then different things to watch. We’ve got a blacksmith demonstration going on in the blacksmith shop.”
Dodson said that the classic sorghum mill will be running throughout the event, with the mule team operating. He said Field Day will kick off at 10:00 AM and the full event schedule is available on the park’s website.
