The York Institute Dragons have a chance to stay unbeaten in their district for the third straight year this Thursday when they travel to take on Polk County for the 2-2A region championship.
The Dragons have not lost since week two and in their seven game winning streak have outscored their opponents 245 to 63. Head coach Derwin Wright said he witnessed a change in demeanor and intensity in his players following two straight losses.
“That open week came at the best time possibly coming off an 0-2 start,” Wright said. “Our guys have responded and the seniors stepped up and they’ve turned it around. We’ve got to play this Thursday, Halloween night. It’s a long trip and I hope guys will be ready to play.”
Their opponents Polk County come into Thursday’s game 4-5 and have lost three straight. Wright said the Wildcats have a deceiving record and their performances on the field do not reflect that of a losing team.
“They’re a solid football team and they run the ball at you,” Wright said. “They’ve lost three in a row, so they’re going to be motivated to get a win and this will be their last home game. Obviously they’ve got a lot on the line just like we do in this game, so we’ve got to know we’ll get their A game.”
In their September win over Wartburg Central, the Wildcats had 37 carries for 213 yards and two touchdowns spread across seven different players. Wright said their ability to gain yards no matter who is in the backfield will be a challenge to prepare for.
With Polk County wanting to make a statement win in their last home game of the season, Wright said he expects an early flurry from a desperate team. He said it is his job to ensure that each player is playing with confidence and knows their role.
“You talk to them about just focusing in on what our jobs are,” Wright said. “Doing our job, play your position and expect the unexpected. Watch for double passes and things like that and just be solid.”
