A location now set for the new Fairfield Glade Veterans and First Responders Memorial.
Project Manager Phil Smith said the veterans memorial non-profit signed a lease with the Fairfield Glade Community Club. The flag plaza will be located on the water edge at Robinhood Park.
“We’ve actually started construction,” Smith said. “We’ve done a clearing for the land. Our next step now is to start laying down the foundation for the bricks. Hopefully, we can get started on that this fall if not early this spring.”
Smith said the memorial will display several flags that include military branches, the state flag and local government. Smith said the base of each pole will be made of engraved bricks purchased by local families honoring a veteran.
“We’re really excited about this,” Smith said. “I think we know that Tennessee is a very patriotic state, and we know this part of Tennessee is especially committed to honoring our veterans. We’re just glad that we can be a contributor to that.”
Smith said the funds from the bricks will go towards the ongoing maintenance of the memorial. Smith said up to 2,000 veterans will be remembered through engravings pending on community participation once completed.
The project was first announced over a year ago. Smith said so far about 150 bricks have been purchased. Smith said you can purchase a brick by visiting www.veteransmemorialfg.com.
