Cookeville Water Department officials are urging homeowners to winterize their homes to prevent water line freeze damage this winter.
A few tips include closing all foundation vents, protecting exposed pipes with insulation, and eliminating sources of cold air near water lines.
Water Department Operations Superintendent Carie Phy said it’s also a good idea to leave a small trickle of water coming from faucets that tend to freeze more often.
“The cost is minimal compared to hiring a plumber come out to fix a water break or the damage it could do,” Phy said. “We always recommend to leave that drip because it’s just a small cost.”
Phy said you can also open cabinet doors to expose pipes to warmer room temperatures.
