The Putnam County Schools Maintenance Department will use the winter break as a short window of time to address issues at several schools.
Assistance Maintenance Supervisor Tony Simmons said the winter break allows the maintenance department to operate in classrooms without having to worry about students. Simmons said the maintenance department will focus this break on Avery Trace Middle School’s new greenhouse.
“We’ve already made arrangements to start hooking utilities to that so that’s kind of a new project for that school,” Simmons said. “There’s just always something going on. Always the next job to do and something to move on to.”
Simmons said the department will also look to paint classroom walls, replace ceiling tiles, and implement some minor plumbing fixes across various schools. Simmons said he is hoping the department can make significant progress this winter break.
“We hope that we can catch up on some projects maybe that we are behind on,” Simmons said. “Any work that we can do while the students are out usually has a positive impact.”
Simmons said things are a lot quieter during the winter break and with teamwork the department should get more done.
“Our guys can team up a little bit and work together which we don’t always have opportunities for that,” Simmons said. “We don’t hardly have one building technician per school, and sometimes there are some jobs that need these guys to team up a little bit and do some work.”
Simmons said sometimes an outside contractor has to come in to perform more advanced maintenance. Simmons said when that happens they are on standby to help the contractor and to supervise the maintenance being done.
