White Plains Academy is getting a new security camera system after its campus was identified as the school systems highest safety priority.
Putnam County School’s Technology Supervisor Johnny Sloan said the $41,000 project will be funded through a Tennessee Safe Schools Grant. Sloan said with the campus hosting four different learning centers, it provides unique security challenges.
“All four of these learning centers share some common grounds and parking areas, but every one of those has its own entrance,” Sloan said. “It’s a unique facility, I guess from a security stand point. It’s a rather large campus and a lot of area to cover.”
Sloan said the grant will provide 23 cameras, with about six or seven going on the outside of campus buildings. Sloan said this will address the biggest safety concerns on the campus.
“It was easy to determine that the priority for adding additional cameras,” Sloan said. “There were really, no outdoor cameras at the facility and only a small number of indoor security cameras.”
Sloan said the next steps are sending the order to the vendor and scheduling for installation in the coming weeks. He said the school system would try and do this without intruding on the learning process.
“We’ll work around those schedules and get things set for installation as soon as we can,” Sloan said. “As far as the training goes, all of our school resource officers work very closely with the school district, and some of them have some familiarity with the platform.”
The White Plains Academy campus holds four different learning centers. Besides White Plains Academy, the campus holds the Global Learning Center, FLEX Learning Center and the Virtual Learning Center.
