At least another two weeks expected before the first wave of Sparta’s tornado cleanup ends.
Public Works Director Dilliard Quick said a 20 yard brush truck has completed at least 4 loads a day for almost six weeks
“It’s just taking time because we’ve just got the one guy,” Quick said. “I could pull people from the public works department but the thing is if I did that, we’d get behind on mowing and get behind on spraying the weeds and stuff like that that need to be taken care of. We’ve got the one guy, he’s done a good job. He’s worked about three Saturdays since March 29.”
Residents are responsible for bringing the debris to the side of the road and cutting the brush into small pieces. Quick said the driver will load the debris and take it to the landfill or the rock quarry.
Quick said Saturday is the last day to take the debris to the quarry garage before the landfill is available again.
“We pick up furniture as well, but at this time we’re only taking brush,” Quick said. “When they pulled the permit at the old county garage, the only thing that they can put in there is brush. They can’t put furniture, they can’t put deck materials, [and] they can’t put any tires of course.”
An EF-0 tornado averaging 90-95 mph winds hit Sparta March 30.
