White County Planning To Remodel Science Lab

White County High School in the planning phase of a project to remodel the school’s general science lab.

Science Department Chair Wesley Martin said the plan includes getting new lab tables, fume hoods, and cabinetry. Martin said the goal is to make the space more user-friendly as much of the lab is nearly sixty years old and has been wearing out.

“We have a wonderful program here with CTE at White County High School,” Martin said. “But also in the general sciences we want kids to be interested and be passionate about science. And the more we can get into a lab and the more we can be hands on, the more we can encourage those kids to participate and enjoy what they’re learning and hopefully go on and do something with that further on down the road.”

Martin said the upgrades will allow for more experiments and different measurements so students can be more involved in the lessons. Martin said he hopes to begin the remodel at the start of next summer.

“If it is something that gets pushed back a bit, if it’s something that takes more time, then we’re willing to accommodate for that,” Martin said.

Martin said the school has been looking for options to update the equipment and furniture in the lab for several years. Martin said a proposal has already been sent to the board of education and the next step is to make sure there is enough funding for all of the additions.

“Science is, it’s always a growing field and we’re just trying to look at ways to re-innovate, improve the lab for conditions for our students to come in there,” Martin said.

Principal Greg Wilson said the school wants its programs to be up to current-day standards so students are properly prepared for post-secondary education. Wilson said district administration has been supportive throughout the process.
