White County has opened two new pickleball courts on a small section of land adjacent to the high school.
Parks and Rec Subcommittee Chair Roger Mason said they were able to establish the courts on a piece land they already owned within Sparta without any issue. Mason said it will give citizens a good, local place where they can go to enjoy the growing sport.
“We just had people that were looking, community members that were looking for somewhere to play pickleball,” Mason said. “And we converted, we’ve got three basketball courts and we converted one of the basketball courts into two pickleball courts.”
Mason said the high school regularly uses the courts for different activities such as P.E. classes. Mason said the courts are open to the public when school is not in session, just like the connected basketball and tennis courts.
“We’re happy to have them available for people to play,” Mason said. “And everything seems to be going good.”
Mason said it took a few months from the initial decision to add the courts until they were fully complete and ready for the public.
“The main thing was getting the courts striped off and then getting the posts and nets installed,” Mason said.
