White County Librarian Says Online Resources Available For Snow Days

If your kids are climbing the walls or maybe you are following this week’s weather, White County Library Director Cathy Farley said you can take advantage of resources online.

Farley said membership to the library gives you access to the Tennessee Electronic Library that offers plenty of reading and activities for kids to do.

“Anytime that you are away from the knowledge you lose the knowledge,” Farley said. “You’ve got to keep those brains exercised. We talk about it a lot over the summer months, there’s even a name for it, the summer slide, but even during the small breaks like this it is important to keep them engaged.”

Farley said access to the Libby system allows you to checkout Ebooks, magazines and audiobooks.

“The Libby application has things that will read to them,” Farley said. “It will read it aloud, so they can follow along. It reinforces those sight words. It reinforces those early literacy concepts, colors, shapes, numbers, things like that. It will help them move ahead.”

Farley said the first time the library was open this week was Thursday, and it was only open for half a day.

Libby said even adults can benefit from the library’s online resources.

“There’s even career development for people who are stuck at home thinking ‘hmmm, I need a new job.'” Farley said. “This will be a great time for you to explore it through the Tennessee Electronic Library and the career development side. There’s all sorts of exams, pretests and practice tests that you can take for different certification areas.”
