Students across White Country interested in emergency medical services now have a state-of-the-art tool available to help them learn.
An ambulance simulator has been installed as part of Motlow State’s EMS program. The simulator provides a realistic replica of the back of an ambulance for EMT students. the stationary platform allows students to train indoors.
“It does have several features that are also found on an ambulance which has working oxygen, has working suction devices as well as emergency lights and those type things,” Motlow State Community College EMS Director Drew Hooker said. “It just simulates the internal structure of an ambulance.”
White County Executive Denny Wayne Robinson said this new amenity will provide the best EMT training for students across the Upper Cumberland.
“White County, we’ve got a need for EMT’s,” Robinson said. “Come to find out it’s pretty much the same across the whole Upper Cumberland. There’s not a real good training curriculum here close, and so we saw a need for that.”
Robinson said the closest ambulance simulator is almost two hours away. He said the simulator will be open to any Upper Cumberland county medical training. The simulator is the result of a partnership between White County officials and Motlow State EMS Education.
“Everybody pulled together and did a great job to get this process started,” Robinson said. “We are looking forward to a long term successful program with EMT training in White County.”
Hooker said Motlow EMS strives to teach as realistically as possible to teach students muscle memory skills to best treat patients.
“It allows them to have the best quality training in the United States,” Hooker said. “This is one of the best simulators that’s on the market and it allows us to train our students to the highest possible ability and just puts them in the most realistic situation.”
White County officials paid for the simulator through a $50,000 Three Star grant.
