The White County Board of Education will hear the summary report on the future of Central View Elementary School Thursday.
District Two Board Member Bob Young said a subcommittee met on this topic to hear community opinions on future uses for the closed school. Young said many options are being heard, but a community center got the most positive feedback.
“See if the committee needed to continue with another meeting and who that would consist of,” Young said. “So I think at that point tomorrow’s meeting is just primarily going to be a follow up with the report and looking for guidance on what our next step might be.”
Young said from prior experience, the board of education is not suited to be managing property for commercial or private use. Young said the goal is to give the Central View community the first shot at determining the school’s next use and purpose.
“I think we were interested in hearing what the community would like to see,” Young said. “That we could help facilitate that discussion and any transition.”
Young said that the Central View community reached out to the board of education to hear what could be done to make use of the school. Young said the board wants to keep this moving forward to avoid letting the property deteriorate.
“We realized, we have to as a board we have responsibility, we need to do that,” Young said. “We need to say here’s where we’re going with this and put some plan together.”
The subcommittee first met on June 24. The subcommittee consisted of White County leadership, school board members and members of the Central View community.
