The White County Commission approved a new ten-year plan from the county’s Solid Waste Committee with three main goals.
Commissioner T.K. Austin said the main elements of the plan include streamlining the operation of convenience centers, emphasizing recycling, and completing the sale of the county’s landfill. Austin said it is possible that the sale of the landfill will end up aiding the county’s recycling goals as well.
“The people that we’re negotiating with are looking at possibly doing a regional recycling, which would be big time for us here in the county and the surrounding counties,” Austin said.
Austin said the county is required to have a ten-year plan, and this specific part is only the solid waste portion of the county’s overall plans. He said negotiations to sell the Class-One landfill are still underway.
“That will keep the county to be able to keep getting rid of our Class One, Two, and Three garbage,” Austin said.
In other business, the commission tabled a resolution to approve a lease agreement on a small piece of land next to the landfill. Austin said the interested party had a verbal lease with the previous owner to keep the property mowed and clean. Commissioner Derrick Hutchings said he wants to explore all possible options with the land, as the verbal lease was lacking precise details about the deal.
