White County is considering whether to move or close the convenience center located at the county landfill.
County Executive Denny Wayne Robinson said the change is necessary because Waste Management will not continue to operate the center on their new land. He said Waste Management will not use the center due to liability concerns and issues with their insurance requirements about private citizens on their land.
“There’s a convenience center in Cassville that’s just couple two, three miles away,” Robinson said. “We may just improve that site, make it a little bit larger. Well actually we won’t make it larger, it’s a pretty good sized site, but put more – more equipment and make it be able to handle a larger volume.”
Robinson said it is almost a fifty-fifty chance whether they move or close the center, but closing it down and improving a different center is slightly more realistic. He said they are looking for potential locations to put a replacement center but no space has been identified yet.
He said the vast majority of people coming to that site were already customers like construction companies looking to dispose of large amounts of trash at the landfill.
“Those people will still be allowed to come in, it’ll just be, what we’ll be moving is the person taking out a couple bags of trash from his house type deal.”
Robinson said they are looking forward to getting the transition handled as smoothly as possible with the least inconvenience for local citizens.
“This is going to end up bring a good thing for our community,” Robinson said.
Robinson said the county is working closely with Waste Management to come up with thirty, sixty, and ninety-day plans for the center.
