White Co. School Board Set To Add Student Representatives

White County School Board will set to student representatives to serve on the school board.

Member Jayson McDonald said he wanted to discuss the topic after a recent White County High School trip to the Student Congress on Policies in Education. He said that based on the reaction from students who went, it could be a positive both for the board and for WCHS students.

“I think it’s just a great idea to get students involved in the political side of the school and get their ideas on what they see going on daily in the schools,” McDonald said. “And maybe even bring those students into the board meetings as an adult.”

McDonald said he has been researching school systems with similar policies, including Cumberland County Schools. He proposed appointing one junior and one senior from the high school as non-voting members.

McDonald said that they would appoint the members to serve on the board during the upcoming school year. He said they would start August 1st and serve on the board until the end of the school year.

“I think this would be a win-win 100 percent positive for our student body for this board, I think a lot of good ideas and activities could be exchanged,” Member Dewayne Howard said. “I would like to see that whoever gets this position would see this as a reward. Because we have a lot of fantastic leaders.”

Board member Diana Haston said they would need to find someone outgoing who can contribute to conversations. Board member Sherrie Stone said she thinks this can be a positive partnership moving forward.
