Starting Monday morning, Robert Matthews Highway will be closed at the Post Oak Bridge area for nine months.
Highway Superintendant Jerry Sawyer said the bridge is one of two on that road. He said it starting to deteriorate and needs to be replaced.
“When you drive by right now you can look and see the side rails of the bridge are deteriorating, it looks really bad visually and the structural quality is getting to where we thought we needed to do it,” Sawyer said. “But we got a grant from the state, so the state is helping us pay for it so it’s a really good deal all the way around.”
Sawyer said if you are coming from the south, you can detour onto Farley Road which will connect to Cunningham Road and back out to Lancaster Road. He said crews have been worked for the last week to clear it up and make it easier for drivers to pass through. However, he recommends staying on Highway 111 if at all possible.
Sawyer said they expect the road to be closed for the full nine months once construction starts. He said it will not be safe for drivers to drive through as crews begin the project. Sawyer said they ask for drivers to be patient and extra vigilant when driving the detour.
“That back road is significantly smaller, lower speed so there’ll be low traffic, so just take note if you’re driving through there just be more careful because if it’s a smaller skinnier route,” Sawyer said. “We do apologize for the inconvenience but as soon as we get it back up and running you’ll have two brand-new bridges back-to-back so everything should be in good shape then. “
