White Co. Middle And High Schools Conduct Intruder Drills

White County Middle and High Schools conducted intruder drills Tuesday.

Director of Schools Kurt Dronebarger said the drills are something state law requires to be completed within the first 30 days of school starting.

“We’re educators so that’s not in our mindset to think about how to clear a room strategically from a law enforcement’s perspective or from a fire perspective the best means of egress, that’s not always how our minds work as educators,” Dronebarger said. “So it’s nice to have those folks on our side to walk through the buildings, to think about different things, to look at it differently.”

Dronebarger said an alert goes off across the school, with the object to get the school secured and everyone into safety. He said sometimes protocol calls for staying in one place while other times it might not be the safest thing.

Dronebarger said after the drills are complete school and law enforcement officials conduct a debriefing. They discuss how it went, what improvements should be made and how to continue school safety.
